  • Notes
    • Early Life
      Margaret Elizabeth Pattinson was born on the 26th of May 1820, in Alston, Cumberland. She was the second daughter of the chemist Hugh Lee Pattinson and his wife Phoebe Walton.

      Family Life
      Margaret married Isaac Lowthian Bell on the 20th of July 1842 (she was 22, he 26). See Isaac's entry for more details on their children.

      Death
      Margaret died on the 18th of November 1886 at Hambleton in Yorkshire North Riding. A memorial for her in the church of St Lawrence reads as follows:
      In memory of MARGARET the beloved wife of Sir Lowthian BELL Baronet, born the 26th of May 1820 died the 18th of November 1886. Deeply mourned by her husband, her children and her friends. She lies in the graveyard without.
      "Dear friend, far off, my lost desire.
      So far, so near in woe and weal;
      O loved the most when most I feel
      There is a lower and a higher;
      Known and unknown; human, divine;
      Sweet human hand and lips and eye;
      Dear heavenly friend that canst not die.
      Mine, mine for ever, ever mine;
      Strange friend, past, present, and to be,
      Loved deeplier, darklier understood;
      Behold, I dream a dream of good,
      And mingle all the world with thee."*

      In memory also of her infant grandson, Phillip Hugh JOHNSON, who ended a life full of beauty and promise, the 12th of Feb 1886 to the bitter grief of his parents and grandparents.
      "Or wert thou of the golden winged host,
      Who having clad thyself in human weed,
      To earth from thy prefixed seat didst post,
      And after short abode fly back with speed,
      As if to show what creatures heav'n doth breed.
      Thereby to set the hearts of men on fire
      To scorn the sordid world, and unto heav'n aspire?" **
