    • Early Life
      Louisa Margaret Kelso Bruce was born on the 28th of March 1936 in St Cross, Suffolk, to the Rev. Courtenay Boyle Brice1) and Margaret August Kelso. Louisa was their second child, but Edward (the first born) died just a few weeks after he was born in 1834, making her the eldest. She had a younger brother, Alexander William Courtenay Bruce, born in 1845.

      Louisa spent her childhood at the Rectory in St Cross, South Elmham, where her father was the Rector.

      Family Life
      Louisa married Harry Curtis Nisbet, a solicitor five years her senior on the 20th of April 1858 at the Box parish church (probably St Thomas') in Wiltshire; she would have been 22 and Harry exactly 28 (his birthday was on the 20th of April).

      They had eight children:
      1. Margaret Henrietta, born 1862; did not marry
      2. Harry Bruce, born 1864, married firstly in 1891 Amabel Trevilla Carey by whom he had two children, then secondly in 1919 Irene Gertrude Howard. Modern-day descendents include the Plumptre, Maltby, Cazalet and Thomson families.
      3. Agnes Lockhart, born 1866, who married Hugh McPherson Mitchell
      4. Francis Courtenay, born 1869 and who married Helen Agnes Macfarlane but had no children
      5. Catherine Emelia, born 1871 and who married in 1902 James Kiero Watson
      6. Hugh Adair, born 1873, who married Flora Short
      7. Alice Maud, born 1876, married in 1896 James Lachlan Evans. Modern-day descendents include the Courtenay Evans family.
      8. Walter Selwyn, born 1882, married Lucy Dent but probably had no children

      Louisa's husband Harry died in 1907.

      Louisa died on the 12th of November 1924 in Kingston. Her will named her children Agnes and Francis as executors; she was principally concerned with looking after Margaret Henrietta, presumably because she was a spinster and had no means of support.

      [1] Courtenay changed his surname from Brice to Bruce some time before 1852, probably around 1825 when his father Archibald obtained a Royal Grant, so his children (including Louisa) were christened with the surname 'Bruce'
