| 943 | Looks like he had: - John, b. 1699 - Richard, b. 1700 - Joan, b. 1702 - Martha, b. 1706 This document from 1744 suggests his wife was called Hannah. Here, John is referred to as a 'sugarbaker', and Hannah's father is given as John Sutton, gentleman of Leadenhall Street. Also mentioned here are some Bezeleys, including Hannah, Joseph senior and Joseph junior. There is some marital link between the Bezeleys and John Welford as we find a marriage record (Jul 1730) between John Welford and Hannah Bereley [sic] on FamilySearch. This document from the National Archives dates from 1750 and tells us that John was a 'sugar refiner of London'. It's possible, however, given the timing of the suits, that the John Welford mentioned is the son of John of this page (i.e. John junior, born in 1699). We know that John senior's children were all born in Gateshead, so it's hard to imagine why their father John would be listed as a sugar merchant from London, yet have all his children in Gateshead. More likely is that his son John junior moved to London in trade and subsequently launched (or defended) legal proceedings with his sister and brother-in-law. John junior would have married Hannah Bezeley in 1730 when he was aged around 30. | Welford, John (I1522)
